The new DIAGNOdent method of laser caries-detection is yet another impressive device valuable to our clinic’s pratice. Using DIAGNOdent the doctor is able to non-invasively scout-out the overall health of a tooth.

So why are conventional caries-detection methods less effective?

Water flouridation, though a benefit to oral health, results in harder tooth enamel. Incipient caries lesions that used to begin on the surface of the tooth now begin below the surface and are thus harder to detect using conventional methods (either visual or X-ray).

How Does it work?

The DIAGNOdent probe emits a laser beam at 655 nm wavelength. Clean healthy tooth structure exhibits none-to-little fluoresence at this particular wavelength. However, decay, bacteria and caries flouresce considerably and are thus easily detected by the DIAGNOdent probe. Flouresence readings are output on a small LED screen as the doctor is scanning the patient’s teeth. Readings above a certain threshold trigger an audio alert.
